My Day in Three for today:

  1. I installed a self-hosted version of Actual Budget as I want to investigate if this could become my replacement app for managing my finances.
  2. I watched The Penguin Lessons with my son this afternoon while my wife and daughter were skiing. This movie is about an English teacher who regains his compassion for others thanks to an unlikely friendship with a penguin.
  3. My wife and I made plans for the remainder of our holiday here in Austria. It’s not easy for my son to see the rest of the family skiing while he can’t.

I’ve been playing around with Actual Budget this morning as a self-hosted alternative to YNAB. This might be the Christmas IT project I continue to tinker with during this holiday break.

Actual Budget is a super fast and privacy-focused app for managing your finances. At its heart is the well proven and much loved Envelope Budgeting methodology. You own your data and can do whatever you want with it. Featuring multi-device sync, optional end-to-end encryption and so much more.

My Day in Three for today:

  1. We had a good time skiing today. We returned to our hotel early in the afternoon as the slopes are icy due to a lack of snow.
  2. I relaxed in the afternoon and continued reading my book. It’s no holiday if I can’t spend at least one hour reading a day.
  3. I joined my wife on an after-dinner walk on the mountain while the kids stayed in the hotel. It’s great to have some quality time together.

This was such a nice post to read, bringing back so many SimCity memories. As a kid, I used to prototype my cities on paper too. Mainly because I had to share our computer with my younger brother and wanted to get the most out of my time on it.

Text Shot: I took to SimCity 2000 with an obsessive addiction. I’d play during every waking minute, even leaving our family computer on overnight so I’d have plenty of money (& growth) when I woke up to check it before school.&10;&10;I was in eighth grade at the time, I and remember prototyping SimCity maps on college ruled paper and pencil on the bus to school. It was the first time I ever prototyped.
