Pausing my half marathon training plan in week 8

18 May 2025 ·

I’ve decided to pause my half-marathon training plan as my body isn’t recovering enough for me to intensify my training. I will continue running to remain consistent over the next two weeks, but will not engage in any intense interval training or long runs. I hope to see my HRV increase and my RHR decrease by doing so.

While I’m disappointed with the current results, this is just the way it is.

52 Weeks – Week 34

16 May 2025 ·

I’m collecting 52 songs in 52 weeks. Every Friday afternoon, I add a song to my playlist. The aim is to capture my energy and feelings for that particular Friday with the chosen song.

Week 34/52: Two Lee & Chris Commisso – I’ll Be Around

After 52 weeks, I will have recorded all the seasons, holidays, and high and low weeks of the year (from October 2024 to September 2025) in one self-curated playlist on Apple Music. Don’t use Apple Music? Subscribe to weekly updates via RSS.

I completed another easy recovery run here in Barcelona. Running in this city is fun as there are always so many people running on the streets after a workday. While I’m still a tourist in Barcelona, it is great to experience that I can run through the city without using a map.

With only 6 hours of sleep last night due to an early flight to Barcelona this morning, my body didn’t recover well after yesterday’s 12,8-kilometer long run. So for today, I only completed a 15:00 minute recovery run on the famous Avinguda Diagonal. I trained intending to keep my average heart rate below 130 bpm, which I successfully achieved.

Week 7 of my half marathon training plan

11 May 2025 ·

While this is technically Week 7 of my half-marathon training plan, I needed to return to Week 4 training levels to pick things up again.

Week 4 of my training schedule ended on April 20th. Between then and May 5th, I could only complete four runs, which is now leading to this setback in my schedule. While my initial goal was to increase my pace, I have now adjusted my goal to completing another Half-Marathon distance under 2 hours. The reasoning is twofold:

  1. I need colder weather conditions to beat my personal best (set in December 2016).
  2. My fatigue is high due to a busy period with work-related travel.

Finishing under two hours would still be an improvement compared to my last half-marathon distance run on March 30th of this year.

Website Update

10 May 2025 ·

I updated this website last night and made some final CSS changes to the front page this morning. I’m happy with how things have turned out. As you can see, I decided to design the front page around the topics that matter most to me: Running and Photography.

Apart from updating the design, I also updated the technology behind my site. As a result, everything posted here is automatically shared with the Fediverse. The easiest way to follow updates remains RSS, but if you prefer seeing these updates in your favorite Mastodon client, you can also follow the account @blog@camiel.schoonens.nl.

Now that the design and technology are in place, I will start structuring my content differently to make the overall browsing experience more consistent when browsing different site sections.

To assess my running pace, I repeated the same interval workout today that I did on March 26. While I’m not quite back to where I was a little over six weeks ago, I am pleased with today’s training, as I was able to increase my pace for each set.

Run Log 20250508

8 May 2025 ·

I started this Thursday morning with two different runs on the track: a 5-kilometer tempo run at a pace of 5:13 per kilometer and a 1-kilometer cool-down run at a pace of 6:21 per kilometer.

Both runs went quite well, and I’m happy that I went out again before starting my workday. Today will be a long and intense day filled with meetings and presentations I need to prepare for.

5 May 2025 ·

I promised myself I would pick up my training schedule again this week, so I did today with two separate runs on the track. I did one 15-minute warm-up run and another 28-minute progressive tempo run for 43 minutes of exercise in total.

After stretching on the back of the first run, I started my tempo run, which combined a 5-minute warm-up with a 12-minute ‘out’ and an 11-minute ‘back.’ In my ‘out’ laps, I covered a total distance of 1,96 kilometers; in the ‘back’ run, I covered a distance of 2,28 kilometers.
